Computer Security Basics

We live in a tech-saturated era. Computers are used in almost every sector of our lives for both business and recreation Therefore, it is important to protect our electronic devices from potential extraneous threats. Follow these simple tips to protect yourself today.

1. Have an Uncommon Password

One of the most important aspects of computer security is protecting your accounts with not-so-simple passwords and usernames. Do not use a password that is commonly used, or one that may be easily guessed during a "dictionary attack" on accounts. Examples of commonly used passwords include: password, password123, abc123, computer, qwerty, etc. Rather than using common words or phrases, it is recommended that individuals use a unique combination of letters, numbers, and symbols. Tips? Misspell words, fragment words with symbols, and don't reuse important passwords.

2. Keep Your Devices Updated

An important aspect of computer security not often considered is the status of your software. If you do not have the most recent update of a software program, you may be compromising your device as an old software program may include bugs that compromise your device security. Most computer browsers are fitted to auto-update, and bugs get fixed rather quickly, but it is important to monitor the status of your software on both your pc and mobile devices. This is a simple step that may have important protective benefits.

3. Be Aware of Computer Scams and Attacks

There are a variety of scams and online attacks that may endanger your personal information and the functional integrity of your device if successful. Phishing scams intend to 'bait' users into giving up personal information. Another category of computer attacks is malware attacks, which include trojans, spyware, viruses, and worms. In generally, it's best to avoid opening emails, messages, and downloadable content that appears questionable. Also, when new scams are exposed, the news spreads fast - so stay alert if you want to stay safe!

4. Use Public Wifi Cautiously

Public wifi is a known concern for device security. Why? Because these networks are open and unsecured and require no authentication to establish a network connection. This makes these networks are a hacker's dream, as they may intercept the networks and steal your personal information. Want to stay safe? Avoid doing important transactions such as banking in these locations, keep wifi off unless your using it, use a VPN for work activity, set your phone of 'sharing' mode, and again - make sure your software is updated. It's bad enough if someone takes your drink at Starbucks, but it's even worse if they take your personal information!

So there you have it, some basic tips to keep your devices safe while surfing the web. It doesn't take much to protect yourself from a variety of computer threats, but small choices may make big impacts in ensuring safety and upholding integrity. As they always say, "Safety first!"
